Pharmacology

Mechanism of Action

Antioxidant vitamins and minerals

  • Strategies to prevent the conversion from dry AMD to wet AMD include high-dose consumption of the antioxidant vitamins, C, E, and beta-carotene, plus the minerals zinc and copper
  • Over a 10-year period, researchers conducting a trial sponsored by the Age-related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) Research Group observed a significant reduction in the development of wet AMD in at-risk individuals who used the Ocuvite PreserVision preparation containing vitamins A, C, and E as well as zinc and copper compared with those who took antioxidants alone, zinc plus copper, or placebo
  • Lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, and zeaxanthin may also provide risk reduction for AMD
  • Lutein, a carotenoid found in dark leafy green vegetables, is currently being evaluated in the AREDS-2 trial
