Diagnostic Considerations

Conditions to consider in the differential diagnosis of type 2 diabetes include the following:

  • Atypical diabetes mellitus (ADM)

  • Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY)

  • Diabetes secondary to mutations in mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)

  • Genetic defects of the beta cell

  • Genetic defects in insulin action

  • Diseases of the exocrine pancreas

  • Endocrinopathies

  • Drug- or chemical-induced diabetes
