Hyponatremia

Consider use as second line treatment of moderate or profound hyponatremia (first line treatment is fluid restriction)

0.25-0.5 g/kg/day PO (European SIAD guidelines)

Dosage range

  • 45.5 kg: 11-22.75 g/day
  • 54.5 kg: 13.6-27.2 g/day
  • 63.6 kg: 15.9-31.8 g/day
  • 72.7 kg: 18.1-36.3 g/day
  • 81.8 kg: 20.4-40.9 g/day
  • 90.9 kg: 22.7-45.4 g/day

Dosing Considerations

Do not use for patients with hypovolemic hyponatremia, hyponatremia associated with adrenal insufficiency, or hyperammonemia

Mechanism of Action

Urea normalizes serum sodium by inducing osmotic excretion of free water without associated electrolyte depletion
