Mechanism of Action
N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist that suppresses the excitation of the auditory nerve that is perceived as tinnitus
Inner ear insults may trigger increased levels of extracellular glutamate leading to excessive activation of cochlear NMDA receptors, which result in sensory cell damage
Damage to sensory cells is the proposed mechanism responsible for abnormal spontaneous firing of auditory nerves, resulting in perceived tinnitus
