Primary care physicians can provide trusted guidance to patients about effective management of overweight or obesity, but many are reluctant to discuss body weight with their patients.
Two doctors specializing in obesity medicine, Dr Holly Lofton of New York University and Dr Amanda Velazquez of Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, discuss tools and resources available to clinicians to aid in opening the conversation with patients about weight management.
They also discuss available medical therapies, including US Food and Drug Administration–approved glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)/(GLP-1) receptor agonist, general guidelines for bariatric surgery, and the fundamental lifestyle changes that complement any therapeutic intervention.
