Hypercalcemia can result when too much calcium enters the extracellular fluid or when there is insufficient calcium excretion from the kidneys. Hypercalcemia affects nearly every organ system in the body, but it particularly affects the CNS and kidneys. Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and the underlying cause.
