Ulcerative colitis is one of the two major types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), along with Crohn's disease. Unlike Crohn's disease, which can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, ulcerative colitis characteristically involves the mucosa and submucosa of the colon. Worldwide incidence and prevalence have been increasing, affecting approximately over 2 million people in North America and over 3.2 million people in Europe.
