Clostridium difficile, a potentially deadly disease, has a new enemy: itself! Researchers at the Loyola University Health System have used a “fight fire with fire” approach, giving patients spores of non-toxin-producing C difficile to create competition with the original, toxic strain. With phase III trials on the horizon, health care providers may have a new ally in the fight against the most common hospital-acquired infection.
