Clinical Trend of the Week (Sept 5-11): Hypernatremia

Searches for this condition likely spiked in response to the British Regional Heart Study, which found that hypernatremia and mild hyponatremia are both associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in older men who have no history of coronary artery disease, heart failure, or stroke. The findings suggest a need for clinicians to monitor sodium levels in older men who previously may not have been viewed as at risk for cardiovascular disease.
