Clinical Trend of the Week (December 12-18): Cholelithiasis
A study from Finland is likely responsible for the increased popularity of this week's top search term. A team of researchers from the University of Eastern Finland determined that idiopathic pancreatitis is frequently caused by small gallstones that are hard to observe prior to surgery. In fact, gallstones were found in two thirds of patients with idiopathic pancreatitis. The study also found acute pancreatitis was more common among those who used statins than in those who did not. The study may allow physicians to better chart the course of the condition.
