Clinical Trend of the Week (April 16-22): Labiaplasty

The stigma associated with certain health procedures can be a subject of embarrassment, despite very real physical health concerns. A recent set of statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), revealed a booming trend that rarely receives public discussion. In 2015, the rate of women choosing to undergo labiaplasty increased by a whopping 16%. The increase is not being attributed merely to a concern about conforming to body image standards; the expanding use of the procedure is also recognized as a way patients are addressing a physical and emotional discomfort. The ASAPS notes that the procedure is still considered relatively "new," which likely explains why searches on this topic rose in popularity alongside news of the procedure's rise in popularity.
