Each week, we identify one top search term, speculate as to what caused its popularity, and provide an infographic on a related condition. If you have thoughts about what's trending and why, feel free to share them with us on Twitter or Facebook!
Clinical Trend of the Week (July 23-29): HIV Cure
Unfortunately, it's not always good news that increases searches on a particular subject. Disappointing results from a trial attempting to achieve a cure for HIV helped inspire this week's top search term. At the 2016 International AIDS Conference, held in South Africa, experts described their frustration with a trial of a latency-reversing strategy to cure HIV. The study focused on 15 patients in whom the HIV virus had been suppressed for more than 2 years after initiation of antiretroviral therapy during acute infection. Unfortunately, intervention with the latency-reducing therapy did not fully eliminate the virus. The quest to find a definitive cure for the disease continues, and a curiosity about progress resulted in this week's top search term.
