Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), also referred to as "chronic myeloid leukemia," accounts for 20% of adult cases of leukemia. Although the historical median survival of patients with CML was 3-5 years from the time of diagnosis, patients now have a median survival of 5 or more years. This improvement is due to earlier diagnosis, improved therapy with targeted drugs and bone marrow transplantation, and better supportive care.
