In May 2016, the Diabetes Surgery Summit II Guidelines were released. Designed to replace the US National Health Institute guidelines from 1991, which used body mass index (BMI) as the only criterion, the new guidelines focus on the severity and degree of type 2 diabetes mellitus medical control as the key components of eligibility.
