Metabolic and bariatric surgery is a recommended option to treat type 2 diabetes in appropriate surgical candidates with class III obesity (BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2), regardless of glycemic control or complexity of glucose-lowering regimens. It is also recommended for patients with class II obesity (BMI 35-39.9 kg/m2) who have poorly controlled hyperglycemia despite optimal medical therapy and lifestyle changes.
