The new guidelines recommend reconsideration of BMI thresholds on the basis of a patient's ancestry. BMI thresholds for patients of Asian descent should be reduced by 2.5 kg/m2; thus, metabolic and bariatric surgery may be considered in patients of Asian descent with type 2 diabetes and a BMI of 27.5 kg/m2. Patients of Asian descent with type 2 diabetes typically have more visceral fat compared with white patients who have type 2 diabetes and the same BMI.
