Various long-term nutritional and micronutrient deficiencies have been associated with metabolic and bariatric surgery, requiring lifelong vitamin and nutritional supplementation. Anemia, bone demineralization, and hypoproteinemia may occur. Nutritional complications are associated more often with intestinal bypass operations, especially biliopancreatic diversion. The risk for postoperative bone fractures remains uncertain.
