Opioids are powerful painkillers that are highly addictive. Opioid dependence affects nearly 5 million people in the United States and leads to approximately 17,000 deaths annually. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), rates of opioid overdose deaths jumped significantly, from 7.9 per 100,000 in 2013 to 9.0 per 100,000 in 2014, a 14% increase. According to a report on the leading cause of deaths from injury in the United States, approximately 55% of the 43,982 drug poisoning deaths in 2013 were attributed to opioids, of which prescription opioids accounted for 16,235 and heroin for 8257.
