According to the USPSTF guidelines, the following three approaches are nearly equally effective (in life-years gained), provided that adherence to the same regimen is 100%:

  • Annual fecal occult blood testing

  • Sigmoidoscopy every 5 years, along with fecal occult blood testing every 3 years

  • Screening colonoscopy at intervals of 10 years, from age 50 years to age 75 years (after age 75, screening should be individualized)
