Clinical Trend of the Week (October 15-21): Diverticulitis
Sometimes, a new addition to a treatment regimen drives searches in a given week; other times, a subtraction does the same thing. A new randomized controlled trial found that patients with Hinchey stages 1a diverticulitis can skip the antibiotics. The study determined that the use of antibiotics did not prove beneficial when compared with observation alone. In an era rife with concerns about the overuse and misuse of antibiotics, potentially identifying a condition for which the drugs may not be needed is a significant development. So it's no wonder the findings led to this week's top search term.
