High doses of garlic may prolong bleeding time; therefore, it should be discontinued 7-10 days before surgery.

Some evidence has suggested garlic may have antihypertensive effects. Other studies have shown that an increase in dietary garlic consumption may be associated with decreased risk for stomach and colorectal cancer. However, the exact effects of garlic on both cardiovascular disease and cancer risk are still unclear.
