Clinical Trend of the Week (December 10-16): ECMO
The death of a beloved foreign leader resulted in this week's top search. Jayalalithaa Jayaram, the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, died at age 68 years. After she experienced cardiac arrest, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was used. Numerous searches, such as ones associated with understanding how ECMO works in adults and ones associated with survival rates, surged and stayed popular until her death was announced. This potentially life-saving support remains a subject of much interest with clinicians worldwide as well as here in the United States.
