Clinical Trend of the Week (December 3-9): Bipolar Disorder
A celebrity discussing her condition and a new potential biomarker are responsible for this week's most popular search term. Demi Lovato expounded on living with bipolar disorder this week, in the hopes of encouraging others. She discussed her treatment and various struggles with addiction in an effort to further destigmatize mental illness. On a more clinical basis, a study connecting elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) to periods of mania brought attention to the condition. Although further studies are needed, CRP may emerge as a reliable biomarker for bipolar disorder. A combination of popular culture and protein resulted in the surge in popularity for this week's top term.
