Premature ejaculation, or early ejaculation, is the most common sexual disorder in men younger than 40 years. The disorder may be lifelong or acquired. Although an occasional instance of premature ejaculation might not be cause for concern, if the problem occurs during more than 50% of attempted sexual relations, a dysfunctional pattern usually exists. An important component of intimacy and sexual pleasure is lost, and treatment may be appropriate.
