All people experience traumatic events during their lifetimes, such as the loss of a loved one, bullying, or sexual assault. Natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and other situations involving actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violation can leave those involved vulnerable to considerable emotional turmoil. Most individuals display some symptoms after experiencing a traumatic event, but only a minority have sufficient symptoms to fulfill the diagnostic criteria for acute stress disorder (ASD).
