Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract from the mouth to the anus. This variability in gastrointestinal distribution determines the clinical presentation of the disease. The characteristic presentation of Crohn's disease is abdominal pain and diarrhea, which may be complicated by enteric fistulae or intestinal obstruction.
Individuals with Crohn’s disease often experience periods of symptom relapse and remission. Appropriate medical and surgical therapy helps patients have a reasonable quality of life, with an overall good prognosis and a very low risk for a fatal outcome.
