Little evidence suggests that bedbugs transmit disease, although they have been investigated as possible vectors for hepatitis B virus and Chagas disease. Bedbug bites often occur at night because the insects are nocturnal, with peak activity just before dawn. Bedbug bites are painless, but pruritus and purpuric macules may appear. Papules, urticaria, or bullae may predominate together with signs of secondary infection. The bullae are rarely severe.
