Each week, we identify one top search term, speculate as to what caused its popularity, and provide an infographic on a related condition. If you have thoughts about what's trending and why, feel free to share them with us on Twitter or Facebook!
Clinical Trend of the Week (September 23-29): Medtronic
An important, worldwide, voluntary recall resulted in this week's top search term. Medtronic has begun recalling specific lots of their MiniMed infusion sets, which are used with all models of Medtronic insulin pumps. The vent membrane in the recalled products may become blocked by fluid during priming/fill-tubing, which could lead to an over-delivery of insulin shortly after an infusion set change, resulting in hypoglycemia. Medtronic has created an online tool that allows customers to check if their infusion set is one that has been recalled, and an updated version that reduces the risk for insulin over-delivery is already available. The newer, safer component will be provided at no cost. An estimated 350,000 Americans use insulin pumps, which explains why news of this recall resulted in dramatically increased popularity for this search.
