Clinical Trend of the Week (April 21-27): Bipolar II Disorder
A pop diva's diagnosis and further support for an available treatment increased the popularity of this week's top search term. In an interview with People magazine, Mariah Carey revealed that she is in therapy and is taking medication for bipolar II disorder. The singer was first diagnosed in 2001 but admits that, like many patients, she resisted the diagnosis. However, she is now speaking out in order to raise awareness of the condition and offer inspiration to those struggling with the same disorder. Additionally, a new study on bright light therapy for bipolar depression suggests that its use in the morning and possibly at midday can quickly reverse severe bipolar depression. After 6 weeks of bright light therapy, 68.2% of patients entered remission from their episode of bipolar depression. This suggests that those who are treating patients similar to Carey may have a potentially powerful tool with which to combat one of the more serious manifestations of the condition.
