"Probiotics" is a term that refers to living microorganisms designed to confer health benefits on their host. The most well-known and commonly studied species include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces. From such products as yogurts or kombucha to over-the-counter pills that claim therapeutic benefits, probiotics are increasing in popularity. The proposed health benefits cause many patients to either use these products on their own or seek more information on them from health professionals.
