In a recent study, 4 months after treatment, 70% of children who were desensitized via 18 months of combined probiotic and peanut oral immunotherapy remained unresponsive to peanut protein despite no intervening therapy. However, this study was small, and further investigations are needed.

Probiotics have demonstrated risk reduction in the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis and associated mortality. A recent study showed that Bifidobacterium longum BB536 demonstrated efficacy in patients with moderate hypercholesterolemia. Declines in both total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were noted. Bifidobacterium lactis has been shown to counteract effects of celiac-toxic gliadin and may be useful in patients with celiac disease.
