Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive condition that encompasses all degrees of decreased renal function and/or albuminuria, from damaged/at risk through mild, moderate, and severe CKD. It affects > 10% of the general population worldwide, amounting to > 800 million individuals. There is a rising incidence and prevalence of kidney failure worldwide, with poor outcomes and at high cost.
CKD is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and is one of few noncommunicable diseases that have shown an increase in associated deaths over the past two decades. The high number of affected individuals and the significant adverse impact of CKD highlight the importance of effective prevention and treatment to improve outcomes.
