Patients frequently present for evaluation of neck masses. The differential diagnosis widely varies based on numerous factors, including the patient's age, the location of the mass, and the patient's history and physical examination findings. Many neck masses in pediatric patients have infectious origins, whereas neck masses in adults are generally considered to be malignancies until proven otherwise.
The proper evaluation and management of a neck mass depends on the clinical context. The workup and treatment may include observation, fine-needle aspiration or open biopsy, antibiotics, or neck dissection or a wide local excision.
