According to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), severe asthma is a subset of difficult-to-control asthma that is defined as asthma which remains uncontrolled despite adherence to maximum optimized therapy and treatment of contributing factors, or that exacerbates when high-dose treatment is decreased. Patients with severe asthma experience a substantial burden of symptoms, exacerbations, and side effects from medications, in addition to a significant financial burden.
