Classic symptoms in adults with ADHD include difficulty following instructions and directions, problems with memory and recall, trouble concentrating on projects, an inability to organize their time and activities, and failure to complete tasks on time. These symptoms contribute to many interpersonal and personal problems in life.
Adults with ADHD are more likely to experience marital problems, get separated or divorced, and have multiple marriages than are adults without ADHD. ADHD is associated with lower self-esteem in adulthood. ADHD is also associated with challenges in occupational functioning, including switching jobs frequently, poor performance at work, and less job satisfaction. High rates of substance abuse have also been reported in adults with ADHD. Other problems include a higher propensity for getting tickets for speeding and other motor vehicle infractions, and financial challenges.
