Flavanol-rich cocoa ingestion has been found to induce substantial vasodilation. Various studies investigating a potential protective effect of flavanols on cardiovascular disease (CVD) have found inverse associations. The more flavanols present, the less associated disease. Cocoa flavanols have been found to activate nitric oxide synthase in humans. This has led to studies that have suggested a possible protective effect against CVD. However, current methods of processing cocoa greatly reduce the flavanol content, thereby substantially decreasing the health benefits while increasing added sugar content.
