A study by Di Stefano and colleagues found that eating a small bar of dark chocolate that contains olive oil every day may improve endothelial function. The study found that middle-aged adults who ate a 40-g bar of dark chocolate with extra virgin olive oil every day for a month had increased levels of endothelial progenitor cells.

A study examining patients with congestive heart failure found that flavanol-rich chocolate improves vascular function and inhibits platelet function. Recommendations suggest that chocolate should have at least 70% cocoa.
