Dementia, or the loss of cognitive functioning and behavioral abilities, can affect various aspects of daily life and activities. Such functions as language, problem-solving, memory, visual perception, and other elements of self-management may be affected. Emotional control may be difficult, leading to personality changes. Dementia ranges from mild to severe, and cases are increasing due to the longer life expectancy of the world population.
After excluding reversible causes of dementia, the four most common dementia syndromes (accounting for 90% of all cases) include Alzheimer disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy body, and frontotemporal dementia. Furthermore, comorbidity (the presence of more than one disease process) is the rule rather than the exception for dementia in elderly persons.
