In the United States, sexually transmitted disease (STD) rates have hit an all-time high, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For example, in 2017, gonorrhea cases increased nearly 19% compared over the previous year, whereas chlamydia cases rose by almost 7% to 1.7 million. Worldwide, more than 1 million STDs are acquired every day. Among the most common are chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis, and human papillomavirus (HPV). In some cases, STDs can have serious health consequences beyond the immediate impact of the infection itself.
