Hypertension, or high blood pressure (BP), affects approximately 75 million adults (aged ≥20 years) in the United States. Worldwide, high BP is estimated to cause 7.5 million deaths, which is approximately 12.8% of the total of all deaths. It is a major risk factor for stroke, myocardial infarction, vascular disease, and chronic kidney disease. Various guidelines for the management of hypertension are available. Most groups, including the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC); the American Diabetes Associate; and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA), recommend lifestyle modification as the first step in managing hypertension.
