Oxygen desaturation below 88% during 6MWT and a progressive decline in diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide of more than 15% on PFT during a 6-month period are strong predictors of increased mortality in patients with IPF. In addition, dyspnea is a common symptom of the disease and has been associated with a poorer prognosis.

Although the other entities may be seen in patients with IPF, they have not been demonstrated to be strong predictors of mortality.
