Appendicitis, an inflammation of the inner lining of the vermiform appendix that spreads to its other parts, is one of the more common surgical emergencies and remains one of the most common causes of abdominal pain.

In the United States, 250,000 cases of appendicitis are reported annually, representing 1 million patient-days of admission. Appendectomy carries a complication rate of 4%-15%, as well as associated costs and the discomfort of hospitalization and surgery. Therefore, the goal is to make an accurate diagnosis as early as possible.
