Hidradenitis suppurativa—or acne inversa—is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by painful, deep nodules and abscesses that rupture and lead to scarring. The disorder arises from a defect of the follicular epithelium and results in significant morbidity. Hidradenitis suppurativa has the highest impact on patients' quality of life among all assessed dermatologic conditions. About 1% of the population is affected by this debilitating disease.
