Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic disabling disorder of the terminal follicular epithelium in the apocrine gland–bearing skin. It is a progressive disease that often causes keloids, contractures, and immobility. The management of hidradenitis suppurativa is complex and should be undertaken on the basis of its objective severity and subjective impact on the patient. Ideally, medical management should begin in the early stages when treatment can potentially halt the progression of disease and the development of secondary systemic complications. In the later stages of disease, prompt surgical intervention is recommended.
