In patients with severe or widely spread lesions, systemic treatment is indicated, but long-term treatment with systemic antibiotics (eg, doxycycline, minocycline, clindamycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin in combination with metronidazole) often results in poor outcomes. Adjuvant therapy with hyperbaric oxygen has been shown to improve the efficacy of antibiotic treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa.
