In patients with severe or widely spread lesions, systemic treatment is indicated, but long-term treatment with systemic antibiotics (eg, doxycycline, minocycline, clindamycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin in combination with metronidazole) often results in poor outcomes. Adjuvant therapy with hyperbaric oxygen was shown to significantly improve the efficacy of antibiotic treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa in one prospective, randomized, controlled trial.
