Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) manifests in early childhood and is characterized by qualitative abnormalities in social interactions; markedly aberrant communication skills; and restricted repetitive behaviors, interests, and activities. Under the current classification according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, patients who were previously diagnosed as having autistic disorder, Asperger syndrome, or pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified are now diagnosed as having ASD.
The reported rates of ASD have often dramatically increased in many countries over the past decade. In the United States in particular, the diagnosis of ASD has grown at an alarming rate. Are you able to properly identify and help treat patients with this increasingly common condition? Test your knowledge of best practices and key recommendations with this short quiz.
