According to data from the Framingham Heart Study, atrial fibrillation (AFib) is strongly associated with thromboembolic events, including stroke. Approximately 10% of all ischemic strokes in the United States are the result of embolism from AFib-associated left atrial emboli. Overall, AFib is associated with a four- to fivefold increase in the risk for ischemic stroke, regardless of cardiac valve disease.
