According to a comprehensive view on the safety of ingested caffeine, the thresholds for caffeine toxicity in various age groups are as follows:

  • Healthy adults (aged ≥ 19 years): 400 mg/d

  • Healthy adolescents (aged 12-18 years): 100 mg/d

  • Healthy children (aged < 12 years): 2.5 mg/d

In the United States, the average daily intake is about 180 mg/d, which is the amount of caffeine in up to two cups of coffee.
