In the past 50 years, the incidence of malignant melanoma, a potentially lethal skin cancer, has increased dramatically around the world, faster than any other type of cancer. Melanoma is most frequently seen in geriatric populations, but it is also one of the most common cancers found in adolescents and young adults, and it is one of the leading cancers in average years of life lost per death from disease. According to the World Health Organization, 132,000 individuals are diagnosed with melanoma each year.
