Lung cancer is a worldwide healthcare burden with increasing prevalence. Globally, it is the most commonly diagnosed cancer. In 2020, more than 2.2 million new cases of lung cancer were diagnosed, representing 22.7% of the global cancer burden. In that same year, an estimated 1.76 million deaths were attributed to the disease. Among all cancers, lung cancer now has the highest mortality rate in most countries; industrialized regions such as North America and Europe have the highest mortality rates.

Approximately 85% of all lung cancers are non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It is an often-insidious disease that produces no symptoms until significant progression has occurred. Early symptom recognition may be beneficial to patient outcomes.
